South Downs

Stretching for over 100 miles between Winchester and Eastbourne,
the chalk and flint South Downs has to be one of the most beautiful
features of East and West Sussex, with fantastic views across to the
sea to the South and across the County to your North. The scenery
can be spectacular. The South Downs Way has been signposted and it is
possible to walk the entire length, which many people do. A network
of footpaths and bridleways also criss-crosses the Downs and it's on
these less populated tracks where you can often go for miles without
meeting anyone or hearing anything except the wind in the trees and
bushes and the sound of birds doing what birds do best.
In my opinion, the best time to visit places along the Downs is
early Spring, Autumn, or on a crisp, sunny Winter's day. Why? It's
more peaceful and views are clearer.
I've documented one ride here so far, going East from Alfriston
but there are more to come if I ever get the time.
